A heavy duty 1.0 metre x 12.5 mm galvanised earth spike with an earth clamp, which gives you the best, reliable and permanently conductive lead-out cable connection.

The earth stake or stakes (or spike/s) are arguably the most important component of your electric fencing as without a good enough earth, your energiser won't be able to put enough current down the fence line to be effective.

It isn't unusual to need more than one spike depending on variables such as the energisers power, terraine, type of and length of fence can make a difference to the number required. In-short, when setting up an electric fence system, ALWAYS test the earth system before walking away... INSUFFICIENT EARTHING IS THE MOST COMMON ELECTRIC FENCING PROBLEM.

As a rule of thumb, Gallagher recommends a minimum:

    • 1 x 0.5m earth stake for portable energisers
    • 1 x 1.0m earth stake for 12v energisers
    • 1 x 2.0m earth stake for mains powered energisers OR
    • 3 x 1.0m earth stakes if a 2m spike would be difficult to install
  • All above as deep in to the ground as you can get them

Poor, dry, stoney and sandy soil conditions regularly require multiple earth spikes for an efficient system and in this case, you should use lead-out cable to join the spikes together (at least the length of the spike apart) and hammer them all in as deep as you can get them.

Always test a new system before walking away and make testing the earth part of your regular maintainance routine.

Please note: The electric fence earth spikes should NEVER be located within 10.0m of your household (or any other) mains power earthing. If unsure where the mains earth spike is, install the electric fence earth 10m away from any structures that have mains power (a location with generally moist ground would be good – and it doesn't have to be near the fence).
